Choose at least one of the activities outlined below to become a Plastic Tide Turner.

Stop Plastic at the Shops

Select 3 companies / shops that you like and visit often. Work with them to make a list of the plastic they sell or give to customers. Discuss whether alternatives could be used. Think about how you can best convince them. Do customers prefer sustainable shopping? Is plastic pollution hurting tourism and therefore business? Help them review and select alternatives.

Sneaky Plastic

Gather friends. Each person should research one thing that most people don’t realize contains plastic. For example, did you know cigarette filters contain tiny plastic fibers? In fact, cigarettes are the most common type of plastic waste found in the environment. Other sneaky plastics are in chewing gum, clothing, glitter, and tea bags. Have everyone bring their example to school and get permission to set up a poster board with your collected items in a busy space, along with information about why it matters.

Commit to a river or beach for at least 1 month

Pick a spot near you that has a major plastic or waste problem. Commit to keep it clean for at least one month. Bring your friends along, as well as a local politician and the media, to join your cleanup and showcase its success.
